Reverse Chronological vs. Functional Resumes
What’s the difference between a Reverse Chronological and Functional Resume?
In general, there are two types of resumes: Reverse Chronological and Functional. Within each type of resume there are endless ways to customize the content tailored to each individual.
Reverse Chronological Resume
As the name hints, a Reverse chronological resume lists an individual’s employment history with the most current work experience listed first. A reverse chronological resume is the preferred resume style for individuals that possess work history without major holes or gaps in employment. In addition, many large employers prefer the reverse chronological resume format.
Functional Resumes
A functional resume highlights an individual’s accomplishments and qualifications in a dedicated section of the resume, instead of listing them under each job entry (like in a reverse chronological resume). Functional resumes are recommended with those with choppy work experience or a large number of previous jobs. Those out of the work force or with a wide range of diverse skill sets would also find that a functional resume better represents their qualifications.
There is no one format fits all
A resume format should be catered to each individual’s unique professional background and qualifications, as well as the type of job being applied to. For example, what should a business professional with a diverse background in dentistry and marketing who is applying to consulting jobs use? Based on the analysis above, a functional resume seems appropriate – after all, what is more diverse than dentistry and marketing? In actuality, a reverse chronological resume is the right answer because a majority of consulting firms require resume submitted be in reverse chronological format.
